Harborfield research · Study 01
A source-linked reading of BLS employment and median wage estimates for Graphic Designers (SOC 27-1024) in Massachusetts, with explicit coverage and measurement limits.
OEWS covers wage-and-salary employment and does not represent self-employed or freelance graphic designers.
Research question
What employment and median wage estimates does the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS publish for Graphic Designers (SOC 27-1024) in Massachusetts for May 2025?
Population: wage-and-salary jobs classified as Graphic Designers, across covered private, federal, state, and local employers. The occupation is selected directly; no broader Harborfield service-category estimate is constructed.
Data · key findings
These are BLS-published estimates. The annual median is the source’s annualized wage measure; it is not an additional independent income observation. The complete definitions and precision note appear in the table below.
Results · factual table
| Published measure | Estimate | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Employment estimateEstimated wage-and-salary jobs in this occupation statewide; not a count of freelance businesses or customers. | 4,450 | jobs |
| Median hourly wagePublished 50th-percentile hourly wage estimate. It is an employee wage, not a freelance billing rate. | $36.88 | USD/hour |
| Median annual wagePublished annual median wage. BLS annualizes hourly wages using 2,080 hours for occupations with published hourly wages; this is not observed annual earnings for every worker. | $76,710 | USD/year |
| Employment relative standard errorBLS measure of sampling precision for the employment estimate. This is not an error margin for either median wage. | 6.1% | percent |
Source: BLS OEWS Query System, May 2025 state cross-industry estimates. Retrieved . All four displayed fields are numeric in the source; none is missing or suppressed.
The findings above and this table use the same frozen snapshot. No chart compares jobs, dollars per hour, and dollars per year on a shared scale: their different units would make that visual comparison misleading.
Harborfield interpretation
The release describes covered graphic-design employment and the middle of the employee wage distribution in Massachusetts. It does not identify how much a solo practice could bill, retain as income, or earn from an individual client.
A freelance price must address a different question involving service scope, delivery time, business costs, and non-billable work. This study makes no conversion from wages to freelance prices.
The useful result is a documented occupational reference point with a known population and date. It does not establish customer demand or tell a reader whether to enter a business.
